I think the Saskatchewan people are pumped to have an actual Cabela's store in the province. On the day I was there it was very busy, so all I bought was a Cabela's pop-gun for my son :) - He loves it. I did get to chat with products reps from a number of companies. It was a great opportunity to get my questions answered. I'll head back once the initial rush dies down to get stocked up on new gear.

Nice write up Lowell. Interesting about Cabela's staff noting that Saskatchewan residents purchased more stuff via mail-order than any other province, thus the reason for the new store. Get any good gear?

Thanks for sharing your experience, Evan. I hate to admit it, but the best part of pheasant hunting for me is watching the dog(s) work. My dog reminds me of Grimmy in Mike Peters' Mother Goose and Grimm Cartoon, Grimmy says <a href="http://www.thecomicstrips.com/store/add_strip.php?iid=17234" rel="nofollow">"Sniffing releases endorphins"</a> - hunting dogs certainly live to sniff out birds - perhaps endorphins are the reason they love hunting so much. We can learn a lot from our dogs.

I couldn't agree more, Lowell. Some of my best hunting memories are late December pheasant’s hunts with my father. There is something about watching a good dog work that you just can't explain to someone - you just have to experience it. We've got a small French Brittany - so she is out of sight in tall grasses or frozen cattails, but you can always tell where she is by watching the frost explode! Ha.

Great tips Jill! I know a good swim helps me run a lot cooler in hot weather - 'precooling' animals with a swim goes a long way to keeping them healthy and happy in hot weather.

Thankfully I don't have to worry about that too much in February in Saskatchewan ;) However, summer and fall are just around the corner. Keep cool out there.

Hello,
I love your story, and I am glad that Radar recovered well. Many times we don't think about thinks like "heat exhaustion and heat stroke" in dogs. Offering water is a great way to prevent dehydration which leads to heat exhaustion, but what if they wont take water? Sometimes precooling can be a beneficial process for animals facing hot weather. Either a swim or laying on a cool mat to get their bellies cooled down. Taking time to cool them before and in between exercise can help prevent heat exhaustion.

I echo the sentiments Lowell. Here is Spokane, WA we've seen very little of the white stuff. Although it made the commute easier, I missed it and the outdoor opportunities it typically brings.
