As the fall air turns cold and skeins of geese fill the air, I enjoy wandering around in the marsh with my camera with the hope of capturing a glimpse into the lives of our wild neighbours. On a particularly clear day I observed this muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) taking a break on a floating raft of rushes. Now as I look out at the same marsh, completely covered in ice and snow, I can’t help but wonder if my friend is still out there, busily gathering food in the still waters under the ice. Perhaps we will meet again this spring.
