I try to plan my hunting year so there is no 'off-season'. All right, the deer, elk, moose, bear, upland bird, and waterfowl hunting seasons are long over. Sure, my gear is stowed in the closest till this coming fall (for the most part). For me it is certainly a time to relax, cook, and enjoy tasting the bounty of game and other edibles harvested. However this 'downtime' between hunts … [Read more...] about Top 10 Hunting Off-season Ideas

Winter Impressions
I always enjoy finding fresh tracks in the field. The sense that only minutes earlier a critter was moving through this spot where I'm standing, gives me a thrill. Such was the case when I happened upon these Sharp-tailed grouse marks in the snow. These markings were left by a sharp-tailed grouse whose home stomping grounds are a stone's throw away from my own. No doubt it was … [Read more...] about Winter Impressions
Hunting Late Season Pheasants
I've started a tradition in the last couple of years - a "last chance" pheasant hunt. Sometime between Christmas and New Year's Eve I head out to one of my favorite haunts to give my dog one last good run, to satisfy my passion NEED for pheasant hunting (after Dec 31, no pheasants for 10 1/2 months!), and most importantly to get outside, get some fresh air, and burn off a few holiday … [Read more...] about Hunting Late Season Pheasants

On a particularly clear day I observed this muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) taking a break on a floating raft of rushes. Now as I look out at the same marsh, completely covered in ice and snow, I can't … [Read more...] about Muskrat
Stay Warm with C.O.L.D.
I'm one of those people whose internal thermostat is set a little higher than some. You may think this would be an advantage and I suppose at times it is. The problem is that I start to sweat once I get moving, so the moment I stop I get chilled quickly. Moisture quickly wicks heat away from your body. The trouble is compounded because places where a person tends to sweat are also the … [Read more...] about Stay Warm with C.O.L.D.
Mountain Stream in Early Spring
This prairie boy is still amazed when he sees a flowing mountain stream in the middle of winter. In Southern Saskatchewan, most water is frozen from November until April, so traveling to Canmore, AB this past April was an early glimpse of spring for me. To me this photograph reflects (pun intended) the tranquility of a late afternoon spring day. Photo captured by Nikon D300 – … [Read more...] about Mountain Stream in Early Spring
